After a 30 minute climate controlled deluxe motorcoach ride in the countryside, we reach an important part of the glory that was Rome: the Ancient city of Ostia, which was the principal port of the Empire, founded in 400 B.C. as imperial Rome?s power became greater, Ostia became most important as a naval base, but was also known as the ?Emporium of Rome?, as well as the principal passage way of the important representatives of the cultural and political life of that period. The decline of Ostia came together with the financial and political crisis of the Roman Empire. Numerous attacks on the city, which was by then virtually without defense, but still rich with precious material, convinced the few people who were still living there, to finally evacuate the city. Ostia, now days, is like it was: an entire city, in its shape and outlines, in which one can read what was then the life of the in the Roman Age of Empire. This suggestive visit magically leads us into an ancient world, admiring Ostia?s main streets, and the Ancient Necropolis, Piazza della Vittoria, the Thermal Baths of Neptune, with its beautiful mosaics, the city?s fire station, the Ampitheater built by the Emperor Agrippa, Via dei Mulini, & Diana?s House. We next reach the Forum, which was the city center with its Capitolium, Temple of Rome & Augustus, the Forum?s Thermal Baths, the Basilica and the Round Temple. Return to hotels or nearest point.
